Establish what was actually filed
Begin with CRA assessments, available return copies and the taxpayer’s account history. A saved draft or payment confirmation does not prove that a return was received. We distinguish an unfiled year from a filed year that needs an adjustment.
The record inventory includes slips, business activity, property, investments and relevant family changes for each year. Amounts should not be shifted into the current return simply because older paperwork was found during today’s cleanup.
A practical two-year example
Suppose a hypothetical Ottawa taxpayer has no filed 2024 return and a filed 2025 return that omitted a $310 interest slip. The first issue calls for preparing the missing 2024 return. The second calls for reviewing the assessed 2025 return and appropriate correction route. Combining both amounts into 2026 would not resolve the underlying records.
Work through the years with a clear sequence
We agree the years covered, source documents, outstanding questions and submission responsibility. Earlier returns may affect balances or carryforwards used later, so the preparation order is deliberate. Any uncertain estimate or missing record is identified for review.
Past filing and payment dates remain relevant even while the records are being rebuilt. Interest, penalties and any available relief or disclosure process need separate assessment; this service does not imply automatic eligibility for relief or representation in a disclosure matter.
Questions about this work
Can I start without every old slip?
Yes. We first identify the missing years and available records, then list the documents or account information needed to complete the review.
Does paying a balance file the return?
No. Filing and payment are separate actions. We confirm evidence for each instead of treating a bank payment as filing confirmation.
