Document where you lived and how you worked
For an ordinary individual resident in Canada throughout the year, December 31 residence is central to the provincial return review. Keep move dates and residential ties if the household changed provinces. Dual ties, immigration or emigration can require additional assessment.
Employment deductions depend on the applicable payroll rules, including reporting to an employer’s establishment and relevant remote-work arrangements. Keep employer explanations and work-location details with the slips. The province shown in payroll records is not automatically the province used for the personal return.
Worked example: overlapping employment documents
Imagine a hypothetical Gatineau resident with a $76,000 T4 and related Québec employment information describing the same work. The starting record is one employment relationship, not two separate $76,000 incomes. The checklist compares the federal and provincial boxes and identifies any differences.
If a supplemental document shows a $900 benefit included differently for provincial purposes, that amount needs its own reconciliation. Adding every document’s headline figure would obscure the overlap. This example does not assume the federal and Québec taxable totals must be identical.
Confirm whether a Québec return is required
Revenu Québec explains that a person moving from another province who is resident in Québec on December 31 generally files a separate Québec return along with the federal return. An Ontario resident with Québec employment documents has a different set of facts to review.
The filing engagement should identify each return and responsible preparer explicitly. A federal filing confirmation is not evidence that a required Québec return was submitted. Québec tax withheld, provincial benefits and other provincial items also need the appropriate handling.
Prepare one clear cross-river package
Gather the current T4, relevant RL slips or supplemental records, prior assessments, move information and any work-arrangement explanation. Note whether a return has already been filed, because a later corrected slip may require review in more than one jurisdiction.
Use the general enquiry form only to describe the tax year and situation, then agree how required documents will be shared. This guide concerns the Ottawa–Gatineau provincial boundary. Foreign residence, international treaties and U.S. filings are separate matters requiring their own scope.
