Build a complete picture of the year
Start with the tax year, province of residence, prior assessment and current slips. Include changes in marital status, dependants, employment, property and registered accounts that could affect the return. A document checklist helps separate items received from items still expected.
For Ottawa public servants, an amended or cancelled slip needs comparison with the original. We retain the history so a replaced document is not entered as additional income. Pension and investment slips are reviewed alongside employment records.
An example of a missing item
Suppose an illustrative Ottawa resident brings a T4 and pension slip but also earned $420 of bank interest shown on a separate statement. The intake review identifies that source and obtains the supporting record. The amount of a refund or balance cannot be inferred from the size of that one item.
Review the result and the next step
The completed package should explain the income reported, material claims, questions resolved and expected filing or payment action. You review the information and provide the required approval before submission under the agreed arrangement.
The ordinary 2025 filing and payment deadline was April 30, 2026. If that year remains unfiled, identify it promptly; a late start does not move the payment deadline. The engagement confirms filing method, authorization and responsibilities rather than assuming that a preparation conversation has filed the return.
Questions about this work
What should I provide first?
Tell us the tax year, main income sources and whether a return has already been filed. The general enquiry form should contain no SIN, banking credentials or complete tax documents.
Can you guarantee a refund?
No. The result depends on income, deductions, credits, payments and CRA assessment. We explain the calculation and supporting information.
