Retain the history behind the holding
Broker and exchange reports are useful, but the cost history may span several accounts or platforms. Transfers, reinvestments and corporate actions can affect the record trail. A year-end market value is not a substitute for acquisition and disposition information.
For crypto-assets, retain units, dates, Canadian-dollar values and the ownership links between wallets. Trading, rewards, staking and other activities are identified separately. Whether a result is business income or capital depends on the facts rather than the investor’s preferred label.
A missing-cost example
Imagine a hypothetical Ottawa investor selling an asset for $7,200 with a $60 selling fee. The sale report alone shows $7,140 of net proceeds but does not establish the gain. The acquisition records and any relevant adjustments are needed before the cost can be compared with that amount.
Prepare a record that can be reviewed
We organize the transaction schedule, reconcile holdings where records permit and identify missing values or unexplained movements. Software calculations are checked against source data, especially when an imported transaction has no reliable cost or the same transfer appears twice.
The agreed engagement distinguishes records preparation from specialized tax advice or return filing. Complex foreign assets, business trading or unusual crypto arrangements receive a separate review. The initial enquiry needs only a description of the records issue; private keys, seed phrases and account passwords remain outside the process.
Questions about this work
Does an investment slip always contain the correct cost?
Not necessarily. Historical purchases, transfers or adjustments may require additional records. We review the evidence behind the reported figures.
Can you calculate tax from my portfolio’s annual increase?
Not reliably. Realized transactions, income, cost history and the applicable classification are needed; a change in market value alone does not establish taxable income.
